Friends & Links: Jason Godwin

With some of my friends, I can't remember when we first met, they simply appeared in my life. But with Jay, I remember exactly. It was a Saturday morning, shortly after I started going out with Jim. I woke up in Jim's Prague flat and walked to the living room and got shocked. I ran back to the bedroom saying: "Jim, there is a person sleeping on the living room floor!" To my knowledge, that person was not there when we went to sleep. That person also looked nearly dead, with beet-red swolen face, just barely waking up. That person, as I was promptly informed, was Jim's friend Jason.

It turned out that Jason came on his motorcycle, in one shot, in constant rain, all the way from Dover, England. Trapped by circumstances, he arrived at Jim's door late at night and another friend, Bruce Damer, who was then staying in the guest room let him in. He put the nearly frozen Jay into a bathtub to defrost and made sure he got safely to sleep. Jim and I slept though the whole event.

Friendship with Jay is never boring. It's like having an older brother you love, a brother who often saves you when you're in trouble, but also has an endless capacity to drive you crazy. We've had a chance to watch Jason develop over the years and some things didn't change. For instance, his love of all things fast with motor in them - from driving rallye cars to motorcycles to his speedy convertible.

Through his corporate carreer in telecommunications and media, I've had a chance to cooperate with Jay on several occassions and see him in his sharp business mode. He recently became a specialist in Middle East affairs and I'm never sure, if he's here, in Dubai or Jordan or someplace else more dangerous, so we just cross our fingers for him. God knows he's a man who doesn't mind taking risks.
